Tree Removal, Done with Care

Tree Removal, Done with Care

Sometimes a tree has to come down, whether because of disease, storm damage, or a safety concern. Before any removal, we assess the tree and the site to confirm it’s the right answer, and we look at alternatives like pruning or cabling where they make sense.

When removal may be needed

  • The tree is diseased, dying, or dead

  • There is structural damage or a significant defect

  • The tree poses a risk to your home, neighbours, or property

  • The tree is too close to buildings, utilities, or foundations

Our approach

  1. We assess the tree and the surrounding property on site.

  2. We plan the removal to protect your home, landscaping, and everyone on site.

  3. We work safely and efficiently, using proper arboricultural techniques.

  4. We leave your property clean when we’re done.

Safe, insured, and accountable

Tree work is dangerous, and hiring the wrong company can leave you exposed. Happy Tree is registered with WorkSafeBC, which helps protect you from liability if a worker is injured on your property, and we carry liability insurance to cover damage to your property.

Proof of coverage is available on request.

Do you need a permit?

Many municipalities in Metro Vancouver protect trees on private property, and removing one without a permit can mean heavy fines. Rules differ by city, but as a general guide:

City of Vancouver

A permit is required to remove any tree 20 cm or more in diameter, measured 1.4 m above the ground.

Richmond

A permit is generally required for trees 20 cm or more in diameter, and for any tree in an environmentally sensitive area regardless of size. Emergency removals of trees severely damaged by natural causes and posing imminent danger are an exception.

Burnaby

The tree bylaw applies to private and public land. Protected size thresholds depend on the type of tree and whether the property is under development.

City of North Vancouver

Permit rules depend on your property’s zoning, and low-density residential lots are often exempt.

Replacement trees are often required as a condition of a permit. If your municipality isn’t listed, check with your city before any work begins. We can help you work out what applies to your tree, and our ISA Certified Arborist can prepare the arborist report many permit applications require.
